The Regard

It’s 8 PM. The time of our meeting. A shiver runs through me, like an electric current beneath my skin.

I push open the restaurant door. A gentle warmth envelops me instantly, infused with dim lights and intoxicating aromas—bursts of spices, buttery swirls, delicate wisps of smoke rising from the plates. The murmur of conversations melts into a distant melody, punctuated by the clinking of glasses and the soft shuffle of footsteps.

A couple sharing an intense gaze across a dimly lit restaurant table, symbolizing a profound reconnection after a prolonged separation

And then, I see him.

Our eyes meet.

Everything else fades.

A surge rushes through me, fierce, incandescent. It’s as if the air between us has thickened, as if everything separating us has suddenly dissolved. This is not a fleeting glance; it is an invisible embrace, a silent call. It is anchored, vibrant, impossible to break.

The heat rising in me is insidious, unsettling. My heart stumbles in my chest, erratic. My fingers tighten instinctively, searching for something to hold onto, an escape from the flood of emotions overwhelming me. But there is no escape. There is only this gaze.

A month of absence, of silence, of waiting. And in an instant, it all returns, intensified.

My cheeks burn, my breath falters. He, too, remains still. The space between us is no longer mere distance—it is a magnetic field, a taut thread, ready to snap or to draw us inexorably together.

The sounds around us unravel, dissolving into a distant murmur. Servers glide between tables, plates release tendrils of steam, voices drift, yet everything recedes. The world moves on, and yet, it feels frozen in place.

There is only him. Only me.

This gaze.

A breath suspended between us, heavy with everything unspoken, with everything that never ceased to exist. It wraps around me, brushes against me, anchors itself within me with a burning softness. It whispers what neither of us dares to say aloud.

There is no more waiting, no more questions, no more distance to close. Only this force binding us, this warmth coursing through us, settling deep and undeniable.

Our eyes find each other, recognize each other, embrace long before our bodies move.

And in this frozen instant, I know.

I know that he knows, too.
