In the Rain

Emma walked briskly down the cobblestone street, holding her coat tight around her as rain pelted the city. She hadn’t brought an umbrella that morning, and now she regretted her oversight. As she rushed toward a café, a hand gently clasped her wrist.

Emma et Lucas, abrités sous un parapluie, marchent côte à côte sous une pluie battante dans une rue pavée, leurs épaules se frôlant à chaque pas.

You’ll catch cold.

She looked up and met the gaze of Lucas, her childhood friend. He was holding an umbrella over her, his shy smile betraying a hint of hesitation. Emma felt her heart beat a little faster.

Thank you…” she murmured.

He nodded and, without another word, they continued on together under the fragile shelter of the umbrella, their shoulders brushing with each step. The city seemed to fade away around them, and for the first time, Emma realized that what she felt for Lucas went beyond mere friendship.

Switching the Point of View: Lucas

Lucas pulled his coat tighter and watched absentmindedly as the rain hammered down on the sidewalk. He loved weather like this—the sound of raindrops hitting the cobblestones, the stormy scent lingering in the air. But this time, something else entirely held his attention.

Emma.

She walked with her head bowed, clutching her coat around her, her drenched hair forming thin strands against her skin. He knew she often forgot her umbrella, always too hurried or too distracted. A small smile flickered across his lips—she hadn’t changed a bit.

He hesitated for a moment. Should he let her walk past without saying anything? After all, it was only a shower. But his body moved before his mind had fully decided. He opened his umbrella and approached her. His heart fluttered slightly as he placed a hand on her wrist.

You’ll catch cold.

She looked up, surprised. Their eyes met, and it was like a silent thunderbolt in his chest. Her large brown eyes shone in the rain, and he felt a strange warmth flood his cheeks. He quickly looked away, as though afraid she might read every thought running through his mind.

Thank you…” she whispered.

He nodded and took a small step back, still holding the umbrella over her. Why did he feel so foolish? Why did this simple moment make him feel like an awkward teenager again?

They started walking in sync, their shoulders brushing against each other now and then. Each time they touched, a shiver ran down his spine. He wanted to say something—anything—but no words came. Instead, he listened to the patter of the rain, silently hoping her destination café wasn’t too close by.

He stole a glance at her from the corner of his eye. Did she have any idea what kind of effect she had on him? Had she guessed how deeply he’d loved her all these years?

Suddenly, she turned toward him, her gaze subtly changed, as though a thought had just crossed her mind. He felt his breath hitch.

And if, for once, it wasn’t up to him to speak first?
